Understanding our predominant Spanish-speaking population and meeting the health care needs of the medically underserved are part of our identity as a safety net hospital and ingrained into our mission.
Our Patients
Ethnic Diversity
Our patients are quite diverse. While the majority of our patients are Hispanic and Latino, we also see a large portion of Asian-Pacific Islander and Middle Eastern patients.
Race & Ethnicity
Language Diversity
Across the county system, about half of our patients identify a primary language other than English. Interpreter services are readily available in all clinical locations by phone, in-person, and by video. We are fortunate that many staff members also speak the languages of our patients and are certified to help with language interpretation.

Socioeconomic Diversity
We serve many at-risk populations, including homeless patients, asylum patients, and immigrant families. The majority of our patients are insured through Medi-Cal (California’s version of Medicaid) and a proportion through Medicare. As a safety-net hospital, we also see patients who are uninsured, have recently lost insurance, or are underinsured.
