Topics, Didactics & Conferences

We offer additional conferences and didactic series to expand clinical education. These are led by our teaching faculty.

Academic Half-Day

During the +1 Ambulatory Week, interns dedicate Wednesday mornings to the academic half-day.  They engage in primary care didactics, skills workshops, and wellness activities led by faculty and chief residents.

Noon Conference

Faculty teach subspecialty topics during weekday lunches throughout the year.

Morning Report

Residents present learning cases, focusing on diagnosis and management.  Morning report is led by the chief residents and attended by students, residents, and faculty.

Morbidity & Mortality

Residents lead constructive reviews of mordibity and mortality cases.  Sessions are moderated by faculty.

Journal Club

Residents lead constructive reviews of mordibity and mortality cases.  Sessions are moderated by faculty.

Night Float Survival

This lecture series focuses night float interns on high-yield clinical situations.  Led by the night hospitalist attending, interns learn how to manage these “bumps” in the night.

Clinical Teaching

Residents learn how to be more effective clinical teachers and give effective feedback during clinical teaching workshops.  These are sprinkled into the curriculum, including the Academic Half-Day and Retreat.  Residents who aspire further to become clinical educators may join the Medical Education Track.

Quality Improvement

All residents participate in the QI curriculum spanning PGY-1 to PGY-2.  Residents complete QI projects aligned with the Department of Medicine.

Wellness & Resilience

The Wellness curriculum includes reflective sessions, journal writing, and group activities.  These are integrated into ambulatory week didactics and noon conference time.

Ultrasound

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training is integrated into the Ward and ICU rotations and Academic Half-Day.  Some residents choose more in-depth training and application on the Ultrasound and Procedure Electives.

Procedures

Opportunities to learn and perform bedside procedures are available on inpatient and outpatient rotations. Residents may elect to rotate on the Procedure Service, led by experienced faculty, for concentrated development of procedural skills.

Simulation

Residents partake in code simulation during schedule sessions and retreat.  Code simulators are available on the Olive View and UCLA campuses.
