At Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, housestaff will
manage a wide variety of inpatient cardiologic
disorders not usually seen outside a county
facility. This includes valvular disease,
congenital disease, and heart disease in pregnancy.
The Cardiology Division has facilities for all
aspects of non-invasive and invasive procedures.
There are more than 5000 non-invasive and 600
invasive procedures per year. Residents rotating on
the consult service in cardiology receive intensive
teaching during ward rounds, weekly conferences,
outpatient clinic, and reading of cardiac
procedures. There is also a rotation available in
the Non-Invasive (Stress) Laboratory for a more
concentrated experience in the performance and
evaluation of stress testing. There are specialized
outpatient clinics for patients with
Cardiomyopathy, Pacemakers/Devices, and Chagas
Disease.
The areas of research interest include clinical
pharmacology of heart failure, basic mechanisms of
vascular injury, non-invasive evaluation of
endothelial function, and Chagas disease.

The Dermatology Division at Olive View - UCLA
Medical Center is managed under the Department of
Medicine and is actively involved in patient care
and teaching. In addition to staffing twice-weekly
dermatology clinics, the clinical faculty present
special teaching sessions and seminars, and
evaluate cases with the general internal medicine
inpatient consultation service. These sessions
include bi-weekly rounds evaluating interesting
patients in the Medical Walk-In and Pediatric
Dermatology Clinics and monthly rounds in the
ID-Dermatology Clinic. Residents assigned to the
ambulatory medicine rotation attend one to two
dermatology sessions per week. A weekly dermatology
procedure clinic is also available for residents to
attend.

The Division of Gastroenterology is one of the five
members of the UCLA system-wide training program in
gastroenterology. It is situated at Olive View-UCLA
Medical Center. Its objectives are to train
students, housestaff and fellows in all aspects of
clinical gastroenterology. The focus of the
training is on appropriate utilization of
resources, critical thinking, and decision-making
based on clinical presentations. The division
trains one first year fellow and one post-graduate
fellow.
The post-graduate fellow is in the advanced
endoscopy training program. This fellowship
provides training in ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound
as well as other advanced procedures such as
wireless capsule endoscopy, metal-stent placement
and endoscopic mucosal resection.
The currently active research programs are involved
with clinical outcomes/decision analysis,
hepatitis, complementary and alternative medicine
in gastroenterology, nutritional support,
interventional endoscopy, and gastrointestinal
endoscopy. The division oversees approximately

of Medicine
The General Internal Medicine (GIM) faculty
includes a large group of hospital-based
internists, clinic-based internists, and our
associate Internal Medicine-Emergency Medicine
faculty. We also work closely with faculty in our
new Hospitalist Division (see separately). We are
heavily involved in housestaff education and are
supervising Attendings for the majority of the ward
medicine and ambulatory medicine (primary care and
urgent care) experiences. GIM faculty are also in
charge of the Medicine Pre-Op and Derm Biopsy
clinics. In addition, the Division is responsible
for training a fourth year fellow in GIM (Kennamer
Fellowship) at Olive View. Several faculty teach at
the David Geffen School of Medicine campus at
UCLA.
The Division of GIM is known for its outstanding
medical education of housestaff and students. Each
full time faculty member has a specific interest
and training in General internal Medicine (Hospital
and/or Primary Care). Specific clinical and
research areas of interest include: health services

The Division of Hematology-Oncology cares for patients presenting to our medical system with an astounding variety of solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, and chronic benign hematologic disorders. Our division oversees outpatient Hematology and Oncology clinics 4 half-days per week, a full-time outpatient Special Treatment Center for the provision of chemotherapy, procedures, and acute walk-in services, an inpatient Hematology-Oncology ward service, and an inpatient Hematology-Oncology consultation service.
In addition to direct patient care, we sponsor multidisciplinary tumor boards for Thoracic Oncology, General Oncology, Breast Cancer, Gynecology Oncology, and Lymphomas, attended by the divisions of Pathology, Hematolopathology, General and Thoracic Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology, Radiology, and Radiation Oncology. We offer weekly Hematology and Oncology review conferences, monthly journal clubs, and expert lectures every other week focusing on current literature. We encourage elective rotations through Blood and Marrow Transplant and Blood Bank at Cedars Sinai, Hematopathology at UCLA, our community Radiation Oncology partners, and Palliative Care Medicine at the West LA Veterans Administration Hospital.
The division engages in clinical trials research and currently has active protocols for breast and gynecologic malignancies, and supportive care in patients with breast cancer. The AVON Foundation and the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center support our Avon Cares for Life breast cancer program that includes patient navigation services from diagnosis through treatment, post-treatment survivorship care, and clinical trial support. Additionally, our division has an established breast cancer Genetic Risk Assessment Program in collaboration with the City of Hope National Medical Center.

The Division of Hospital Medicine is comprised of physicians whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Specific clinical and research interests of division members include medical education, hospice and palliative medicine, wound care, patient safety, and quality improvement. In recent years, division members have had authorship roles in several peer-reviewed publications, served as principal investigators for clinical trials, presented various educational topics and case reports at regional and national medical society meetings, and have appeared on an ABC News Primetime television segment.
Hospitalists play a large role in the supervision of housestaff and medical students who care for inpatients on the general medicine ward service. Additionally, they work closely with residents and nurse practitioners rotating on the hospitalist and palliative medicine consultation services. Teaching on the hospitalist service is geared toward improving efficiency, appropriate resource utilization, use of inpatient clinical pathway order sets, and chart documentation. When rotating on this fast-paced service, housestaff evaluate several new patients for admission daily and work in a model that mimics community practice.

The Nephrology Division offers an ACGME accredited nephrology fellowship training program and elective rotations for medical students, interns, and residents. Weekly teaching activities include Journal Club, Renal Grand Rounds, and Renal Pathophysiology. Monthly conferences include Renal Pathology and Morbidity and Mortality. The program also jointly organizes with UCLA 8 to 12 national and international visiting professorships yearly. Faculty members are actively involved in research, creative scholarship, and community outreach programs that promote awareness and early detection and prevention of kidney diseases. Trainees are given the opportunity to pursue either clinical or basic research at either Olive View Medical Center or the UCLA main campus.
Our outpatient clinical services include a weekly Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic and an Acute Glomerulonephritis and Renal Transplant Clinic that care for close to 100 patients weekly. Our inpatient consult service cares for a multi-ethnic patient population with diverse pathologies that allows for ample training in all areas of nephrology and procedural skills. In addition, training fellows have the opportunity to rotate through the UCLA Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program to learn about acute renal transplant care and the UCLA dialysis unit to learn about the management of chronic hemo- and peritoneal dialysis.
