Curriculum & Scheduling
Each rotation in our Residency Program has a written curriculum of goals and objectives. Feel free to review our curriculum and other information on our housestaff website at www.oliveviewim.org. Faculty Education Coordinators are responsible for designing and maintaining the curriculum of every rotation.
The curriculum is designed to maximize the resident’s education evenly between inpatient and ambulatory Internal Medicine. Interns are scheduled a maximum of 6-7 call months, and these months are never scheduled back-to-back. This provides sufficient time during the intern year for other pursuits, or for starting (and completing) research for residents who are interested in pursuing a competitive Fellowship.
Prior to starting the intern year, requests for specific rotations and vacation dates are sent to faculty schedulers, who make every attempt to honor these requests. Although scheduling is complex, interns almost always get their first or second choices. In fact,
we pride ourselves on being a humane “family” program, and we care as much about our residents’ non-academic lives as we do about the high standards of the curriculum and educational program.
The ward and ICU rotations are busy call months. One day off per week is scheduled ahead of time; the schedule is published in advance of the start date. Weekends are free during all other rotations (variable during Emergency Medicine). Residents (PGY2 and above) will have 2 weeks a year on a Hospitalist Service. This service is supervised by specific hospitalist trained faculty.
See below for the schedule composition for each year of the program.
