Living & Wellness

Wellness

Wellness is an important aspect of professional work and medical education, and the Olive View Program recognizes its importance in the success of residents during training. The Olive View Program promotes wellness through activities and a curriculum that are led by the Chief Residents in conjunction with the Program Directors. Housestaff participate in monthly workshops from practicing meditation to learning from shared experiences to building resiliency against burnout. Social activities include housestaff barbecues, organized social events, and holiday celebrations. In addition, the Behavioral Wellness Center at the David Geffen School of Medicine provides housestaff with confidential access to mental health services.

Location

Olive View-UCLA Medical Center is located in Sylmar, a neighborhood at the northern end of the City of Los Angeles, nestled in the foothills of the San Fernando Valley.

As a large metropolitan area of nearly 10 million people, Los Angeles provides an endless supply of world-class restaurants, musical venues, theatrical performances, and sporting events (even football now with the return of the Rams). The year-round warm weather also gives residents the unique ability to enjoy a nice day at the beach or to hit the snowy slopes of the nearby mountains. In addition, our residents are entitled to participate in all educational and cultural activities at UCLA.

Housing

The immediate surrounding areas of the hospital are pleasant middle class communities. Housing for rent or purchase is available close to the hospital at lower cost than on the west side of Los Angeles.

The majority of housestaff and faculty live on the west side of Los Angeles (e.g. Westwood, Brentwood, Santa Monica), the Pasadena or Glendale areas, or in the south San Fernando Valley (Sherman Oaks, Studio City, North Hollywood). The commute from any of these areas is against traffic, a real advantage in Los Angeles.

As UCLA housestaff, residents are also eligible for UCLA graduate housing, which can provide substantial savings. UCLA also provide special discounts and other benefits to all housestaff.
